I’m sure many of you are familiar with the drink Orangina, right? No? Well, well, well ...  It’s a carbonated citrus beverage made from orange, lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit juices, which originated in Algeria. YES! Algeria! You didn't know that did you?

Orangina is really refreshing and fun drink. It's the Mediterranean summer sun in a bottle. It makes you want to grab the kids, head out to the beach, stick your feet in the water and build sandcastles ... all while snipping on a cool and refreshing Orangina, of course!

Orangina was first concoted by Frenchman Léon Beton and marketed in Algeria in 1935. Orangina and well as it's "shake me, shake me, shake me" slogan has reached a blockbuster popularity worldwide.

The adventure of Orangina began in 1936 in the plain of Mitidja, which is now Blida.  The father of Léon Beton was a prosperous merchant of orange essential oils. And the first bottle of "Orangina" orange soda was born from a formula developed by Dr. Agustin Trigo Mirallès, pharmacist in Valencia, Spain. Ingredients of this famous drink were : concentrated orange, sugar, citrus, citrus juice and zest.

Orangina first hit Algerian cafés in 1951 and with its rounded bottle soon become popular. And with the Indepdence of Algeria, the Pied Noir took this treasure with them to the shores of France to cities like Marseilles and Paris.

Orangina is now sold worldwide in a wide array of flavoring. But you know what ... unless you live in Algeria or France Orangina comes with a pretty hefty price tag. Aaaaaaand now they put you know that horrible stuff that's bad for you like high fructose corn syrup now. The original Orangina used only sugar but  now use this really nasty for the body stuf ...  But guess what?

You CAN make this summery drink at homemade with REAL ingredients for a fraction of the time and price!  ... YES, you're not dreaming! This is for real! It's really homemade Orangina

Make this drink! Like right now! I mean it ... it's delish ...

Orangina à Maison }
HOMEMADE ORANGINA

Fruity and fun  sparkling citrus beverage that's originally from algeria

YIELD: 1,5  liter
ACTIVE PREP TIME: 10-15 mins
INACTIVE PREP TIME:10mins
COOK TIME: 0 mins

spoon, oranger juicer, pitcher, knife, strainer, zester or vegetable peeler

۞ = SUBSTITUTIONS

  • 500ml - 2 cups club soda/seltzer water/vichy
  • 120ml - ½ cup water
  • 120g - ½ cup granulated sugar or coconut sugar (or to taste)
  • Juice and zest of ½ lemon
  • Juice and zest of 4 oranges
  • Juice and zest of 2 mandarines

PLACE the sugar, citrus zest and water. Bring to simmer, stirring frequently until it bubbles. Turn off the heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes.

STRAIN the liquid into pitcher. Add the citrus juices and club soda/seltzer/vichy and stir well. Chill before serving.

Pour into your favorite summery glass and enjoy!

    Storage
This beverage will last for about a week. You can freeze the "base" that you simmered and freeze for later use for up to 6 months. To use, simply place the base on the countertop to thaw. Once thawed out, add the club soda and enjoy!

    Variation
You can play around the citrus combination here. You can easily make this drink using only oranges, if that's what you have around.

Instead, of using sugar you can use Stevia or Agave nectar, adding as much as you like for the sweetness desired.
