There are many verses in the Quran which reflect the importance of cleanliness. For example, Allah says:
“…Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean”
(Quran 2:222).
In the Quran worship and seeking Allah’s love is conditioned with cleanliness and purity as the Holy Book says:

“…In it [mosque] are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure” (Quran 9:108).

And one of his sayings the Prophet Mohammed (عليه السلامhas termed cleanliness as half of faith. These quotes from the Quran and Sunnah let us know that without cleanliness of our body and environment, one cannot receive the proximity of Allah spiritually and most importantly, faith cannot be completed in the absence of cleanliness and purity.

With my children, back in school I have slightly more time to tackle cleaning jobs that I've missed around the house. A few years ago, I made a commitment to myself to use only ALL NATURAL cleaners after finding out that I have an allergy to bleach and suffered for years with crippling pain due to eczema caused by bleach. Unforunately, here in Algeria there aren't any commerical green products so I had to find homemade alternativesReading online and doing many experiments at home, الحمد لله‎ the results have healthier, safer, cheaper and cleaner home.

This post has been a LONG time coming. I have been tweeting this recipe for little over six months now. I have tried just about every single diy all-natural “crunchy” soap recipe that I could find! None of the recipes worked well enough to cut grease.

Just to note, most natural recipes don't yield a soap that's sudsy. Why? Because homemade soaps lack all theincomprehensible preservatives and petroleum used in commerical soaps. And suds aren’t necessary to clean. In fact, they actually make soap less effective because it becomes harder to rinse off from a surface. Suds in commercial soaps are from the surfectants that are added because consumers like suds. People think that suds = soap that works. Nope! Don’t be duped by this! Not only are surfectants not necessary to clean, they are often nasty chemicals…sodium lauryl sulfate and parabans to name a few. This dish soap is suitable for sensitive hands and is prefect for delicate glassware and china. But can also tackle your toughest grimmy baked on pans.

And another reason why I love this recipe that is very easy to throw together and requires very little time and effort. And finally it's customizable. By adding the essential oil of your choice you can create some really trés chic soaps. You know the kind, that sells online and in boutique for like a gazillion dollars per ounce! Very little hassle for a toxin-free economical dish soap!

Here's a little something about commerical brand dish soaps

For this recipe, I'm using an olive oil soap savon de Marseille as the base. I use this for many uses in my home including stain fighters, liquid handsoap and even shampoo. It can be found in most supermarkets in Algeria. This one bar will be enough for several recipes of this dish soap. For extra sensitive skin, use the one for babies that's sold in the pharmacy "savon de Marseille bébé". If you don't have savon de Marseille where you live, you can easily sub a glycerin or natural vegetable based soap for this recipe. If you use savon de Marseille, your dish soap will be white or pale green. But if you use a vegetable or glycerin based soap, you'll end up with the a paler shade of the soap you used.

This recipe also uses liquid glycerin and washing soda. The glycerin acts as a solvent and improves smoothness. You could alternatively use light corn syrup instead.  Baking soda is a mind-blowing green cleaner that all halal green homes should have on-hand. It's the scouring agent in my homemade dish soap that literally lifts off food particles from the dishes. The washing soda is the sustance in this recipe which has the grease-cutting power. It's sold in Algeria in most supermarkets and cleaning supply shops, and is known by its French name cristaux de soude. If you're into science, it's scientific name is sodium tetraborate decahydrate. You can alternatively make your own washing soda at home with baking soda.

Please Note: This soap tends to thicken over time. If that happens, just add a little warm/hot water and stir to mix. Also, shake from time to time to make sure the liquid is thoroughly distributed.

And does it work? See for yourself ...

{ Homemade All Natural Grease Cutting Liquid Dish Soa}

Fullfill half your deen by keeping your house worship clean with this homemade  ALL NATURAL & TOXIN-FREE dish liquid.

Homemade, toxin, paraben free, allergy-friendly, vegan-friendly

YIELD: SERVES 1 bottle
PREP TIME: 5- 10 MINS
COOK TIME: 2-3 MINS

grater, sauce pan, blender, wooden soap, empty plastic bottle or mason jar

۞ = SUBSTITUTIONS
  • 60ml - ¼ cup non-GMO vegetable-based liquid glycerin
  • 1 TBS baking soda
  • 3 TBS washing soda
  • 1 liter - 4 cups boiling water
  • 20 drops of your favourite essential oil like lemon, orange, lavender, juniper, pine tree, thyme, tea tree, eucalyptus, rosemary
  • empty and cleaned out dish soap bottle or mason jar
TO RINSE:
  • 2 TBS white vinegar per one load

POUR the water in a sauce pan. Bring it up to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer.

GRATE the soap and then add it to the sauce pan. Stir to dissolve.  Proceed by adding the washing soda, baking soda and glycerin. Stir to dissolve.

TURN off the heat and  the essential oils and stir in.

ALLOW to cool in the pan.

ONCE completely cooled, blend the mixture in a blender. Depending on your blender, you may need to do this in batches. Blending the mixture will yield a smooth dish liquid.

USE 1-2 TBS per load of dishes. And 2 tablespoon of white vinegar to the rinsing water for clean shine and spotless dishes.

    Storage
This dish liquid will keep on your repurposed bottle for a very long time. I 've mine up before being able to see actually how long it will keep. But I usually make a large batch doubling or tripling the recipe and storing it in a 6 liter bottle - refilling my small bottle as needed. (same type of purple bottle as below)

    Shopping

As mentioned above, you can buy washing soda in most supermarket in the cleaning aisle in Algeria. It's known by its French name "cristaux de soude". You can see the bag in the first collage. Or alternatively with a little chemistry you can turn baking soda into washing soda easily with this tutorial.
