Thanks for visiting!

There is dawning warm coming off the Mediterranean, with only a gentle wind under a light blue sky. The land turning from its lush hues of Spring's greens to the vibrant colours of Summer. It's the midway point of Ramadan. We've been blessed all over the region to have had a mild weather so far. A real blessing for the faster.

And when I think of summer, I think of watermelons! Memories of my childhood when we used to go the farmer's market to pick out the watermelon of the season. It was quite a joy. The scent of a watermelon is very distinctive and is a good clue to that ripeness of the watermelon. A ripe watermelon is never gritty or bitter tasting like a cucumber but juicy, luscious and sweet.

Living in Algeria, eating watermelon on the beaches is one great memory we enjoy yearly. They can also be a refreshing treat during the summer fasting days.Watermelons in my area generally come from the farmlands of El Affroun, Mouzaia and El Chiffa. When traveling by car, one can easily stop by any vendour selling his produce alongside the road then take this juicy treat down to any beach along the coastline to enjoy.

Watermelons are mostly water — about 92 percent — but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. There's even a modest amount of potassium. Plus, this quintessential summer snack is fat-free, very low in sodium and low in calorie. And not to mention it's a Sunnah food.
I added some extra Omega 3 fatty acid rich flaxseeds that I ground in my coffee grinder for an added healthy boost.

I think you’ll love this smoothie. It’s cold, refreshing, naturally sweet, just a little tart, watermelon-y, summer appropriate and utterly delicious!!! And did I mention Sunnah?!

I used local in-season watermelon -- with seeds. I just deseed the watermelon by hand and chopped them up. You can use a seedless variety if that's easier for you.

I also used whole brown flaxseeds that I ground up my coffee grinder. You could optionally just throw them in whole but I think they wouldn't be so fine as if you ground them beforehand.

Strawberry - Watermelon Smoothie
Refreshing, hydrating and super-simple - the perfect summer drink!

‣ 4 cups - about 1 kg cleaned and seeded frozen watermelon
‣  handful of hulled frozen strawberries
‣ one  90g - 4oz plain or vanilla yoghurt
‣ Little squeeze of lemon (or lime)
‣ 1 TBS mazhar (orange blossom water)
‣  1 TBS flaxmeal (or flaxseeds)

1. Cut and deseed the watermelon. Then clean the strawberries. Cut them both into smaller manageable pieces. Place them in the freezer for at least 2 hours or until frozen.

2. Grind the flaxseeds in a coffee grinder until fine.

3. Place all the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.

Garnish with mint and serve chilled.

    Storage
⇝ This smoothie is best fresh. If you make it ahead, be sure to consume within a few hours as I have found this smoothie separates. YBut you can freeze the watermelon and strawberries in a bag, then blend them together later.

    Variation
⇝ You could optionally add a sweetener like honey, Stevia or sugar if you'd like a sweetener smoothie.
⇝ You could add some chia, hemp or flaxseeds to this smoothie to make it even healthier!

    Substitutions
⇝ You can add a handful of mint before blending for a little kick.
⇝ You can use another flavour of yoghurt if you like.
    ⇝ Use a non-dairy yoghurt for vegan.
